why is the recipient address in the upper left corner of the envelope where
the return address should be?

http://www.gmayor.com/changing_envelope_layout.htm, however as this is
presumably a merge, you need to be sure that you insert your addressee merge
fields in the envelope address paragraph style. You may find it simpler to
use one of the envelope templates from my web site as a base for your
envelope merges. Use a document created from the template (an envelope) as
the base for a form letter merge.
