Default Office 2007 simple question: How do I rearrange the buttons?

This is not a rant.

I just want to change the order of some of the buttons one of the
ribbons in Word (Outlook actually, but I assume the procedure is the
same across Office 2007 apps - if possible at all). In pre-2007
versions, I could simply re-order the buttons on the toolbar to put my
most commonly used buttons to the left - whether they were related or
not.

In my workspace view, the button I need frequently is squished into a
"summary button", so I have to expand the button and then choose the
command.

I'd simply like to move the button I want to be the leftmost button in
one of the button groups so that when the button is squished, it is
still visible. Tools--Customize?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you can't rearrange them. Based on
user feedback (provided by Customer Experience Improvement Program data from
Word 2003), Microsoft determined that most users never customize their
toolbars and prefer a consistent interface that never changes, so that is
what they have provided. It is possible to customize the Ribbon is you teach
yourself Ribbon UI--or you can get Patrick Schmid's Ribbon Customizer add-in
to do it for you. See
http://pschmid.net/office2007/ribbon...izer/index.php and/or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customizat...mizeRibbon.htm.

Microsoft has decided that no one can change any of the built-in groups on
the ribbon. :-(

Patrick Schmid offers a RibbonCustomizer add-in
(http://www.pschmid.net/office2007/ribboncustomizer) that will let you add
your own group, with whatever content you want, to any ribbon. If your
customization needs go beyond one button, I heartily recommend it.

If it's just the one button, add it to your Quick Access Toolbar.
Right-click the button you want and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar", or
right-click the toolbar itself and select "Customize Quick Access Toolbar",
then find the appropriate command (the dropdown at the top of the list lets
you choose the category) and click Add.
