Default How do I lose on-screen "tab" graphics?

I was writing a letter, accidentally hit SOME BUTTON, and now all of my "hard
returns" and "tabs" are shown with graphics like: ----

What do I have to do to turn OFF this feature so I can see my text without
the graphics?

Thanks,

Bobby
