Default Outline number - change of format

I am doing a degree project report, and have outline numbering working.
However, I want the numbering for the Appendices to go A, A.1, A.2, B and so
on, wherease the body of the report goes 1, 1.1, 1.2, 2 and so on.

I've read the Shaun Kelly link and it doesn't seem to mention this.

I played around with a section break to no avail.

I don't want the document in two parts - there are so many references from
the actual report to the appendices which have to be able to update if the
numbering in the appendic changes.

So, is this possible? Or is it a wild goose change that I might as well
give up on right now?

TIA

Ah so! No - and I see it answers the question exactly for me. I'll read it
carefully and have a go on a new document.

Thanks for this, and I'm glad it can be done though I will probably have to
start a new document and copy it all across. However there is time to do
that before the 12th November!

Well - having read Shauna's articles and had a play, I'm having problems -
this is Word 2000. I can link the headings as suggest, and attach them to
styles. The problem is getting the correct previous level. It works find
for Level 2 having level 1 as the previous level, but will level 3 accept
level 2 as the previous level? No. Same problem with headings 6-9 for the
appendices.

Are there known problems with this for Word 2000? Or common user errors
that I might well be making?

Grrrr...

There shouldn't be any problem getting level 3 to accept level 2 as the
previous level; in fact, that should be the default setting. But I'm not a
numbering expert, and they don't necessarily hang out here. I'd suggest you
post in the numbering NG
(news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...word.numbering).

Thanks. After a break I realised it was operator error... The diaglog
where the levels are selected wasn't very clear to me.

I ended up regenerating normal.dot (probably a good idea anyway) redoing my
heading styles so they cascade and 6-9 are for the Appendices (1e.g. A.1
instead of 1.1), and then saving that as a new style to have the outline
numbering.

After a lot of cut'n'paste the document is there, though now I have to go
round fixing the cross-references... I keep telling myself it will all be
worth it in the end, and I will be finished pretty soon!

Thanks

Perhaps a bit late to mention this, but you might want to base your document
on a specific template other than Normal.dot. Once you've linked your
numbering format to styles, you don't really have to worry much about what
the default numbering in Format | Bullets and Numbering is. I go in
periodically and reset all the panes on all three tabs, but when you go to
that dialog from a numbered style, your numbering scheme will always be
displayed (and that's the one you *must* pick); and of course you must
always go in through level 1 if you're planning to change the numbering in
an outline-numbered list.

Hi Suzanne

Thanks, yes, I did save a new template once normal.dot was back to - normal!
(well my version of normal).
