Default Documents do not automatically default to Word 2003 for opening up

Can not add Word as the default program. And can not remove the current
default programs, which are anything but Word 2003. Word creates a document,
but when I save it as a Word document, it still does not default to Word when
I try to open it up. What gives. Am using Windows Vista Home operating
system.

Try re-registering Word; see
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/reregisterword.htm.

If the "other" program keeps claiming the file associations,
see if it has an option to stop it from doing that.
