I am trying to place a 4x4 matrix within the brackets. I select the
brackets, then being within the brackets, I go and select the 4x4 matrix and
the brackets disappear. Others perform the same steps and the brackets
remain - I am told to figure out what setting I have that is causing the
problem - can you help?

We can help, but we need to know what version of Word you're using.
Also, if you're using Word 2007, which equation editor? (If you don't
understand my question about "which equation editor", just tell us
what steps you go through to begin creating the equation.)
