Discourage auto-correct spelling. It harms spelling cognition.
This is a plea for the good of mankind! The use of auto-correction for
spelling in Word harms people's understanding of the language. It does not need to be eliminated, but its use should be discouraged among students and poor readers/writers. It is a necessity in certain work environments, of course, but it should not correct complex words like "anomoly," where a person should at least have to take one extra step before seeing the proper spelling. Whatever. Is anyone ever going to see this? ---------------- This post is a suggestion for Microsoft, and Microsoft responds to the suggestions with the most votes. Word does not correct most misspellings unless you have the "Automatically
use suggestions from the spelling checker" box checked in Tools | AutoCorrect Options. I believe this is unchecked by default. Although some of the AutoCorrect entries are common misspellings, many are really just typos, and the use of AutoCorrect to insert large chunks of text is so valuable that I would be very loath to sacrifice it (though it is possible to do so by clearing the check box for "Replace as you type"). -- Suzanne S.
