Default Captions and Renumbering

I have four graphics that I added in two rows, side-by-side (figure 1 is top
left, fig. 2 top right, fig. 3 bottom left and fig. 4 bottom right). As I
added each graphic, I added its caption. I tried to make sure the insertion
point of each graphic was somewhere after the previous one (I am using Frames
with the graphic and caption "In line with text").

Friday, the references were numbered in order, but today when I did an
update of the fields, Word renumbered them in a different order. When I move
the graphics around and update the fields, Word renumbers them randomly, NOT
in the order they were inserted or the order in which they appear in the
document.

Questions:
1. How do I ensure (if possible in Word 2003) that the graphics are inserted
in the right order so that they will be numbered in the correct sequence?

2. What is causing the random re-numbering of the graphics?

3. Sometimes the frames move to the top of the page and get stuck so that I
can't move them next to the paragraph. What setting do I need to change to
allow them to move more freely? I tried "relative to page", but it seems to
have little effect (I can move the box down one line, but no more).

The order of the captions will, as you have realized be determined by the
order of the frames in the text, which you can see more clearly in Normal
view. But have you considered instead using a 2x2 table for the graphics
with their captions? This would force word to number the captions in the
order you require. It also makes the entire arrangement In Line With Text,
which will make it much easier to maintain.

I think that Suzanne is very right. However, I personaly would take it a
little futher and do one thing different. Instead of making a 2x2 table I
would make a 3x6 table. Lets number these box's. Ok, box one would be the
upper left then box two would be the first one to the right of box one, then
the far right would be box three. Move down one row and on the far left is
box four, just to the right of four is box five etc.. now I would put your
first picture in box 1 and its caption in box 4. Then the next picture would
go into box 3 and its caption in box 6. Picture 3 would go into box 10 and
its caption in box 13. Pictue four would go into box 12 and its caption in
box 15. by doing it this way you would have a row between the pictures, and
a column between the pictures. You could then adjust the width of the row or
column to adjust the spacing between them. Just make sure to go to the table
properties and tell it to collapse the table border, and also set the border
width to -0-, in that way you will never see the table in printing.

This is a trick I have used ever since word-97 and it works great!

This elaboration is not necessary; the same thing can be accomplished in at
least two other ways:

1. Using left/right indents and Space Before/After on the respective styles
used for the pictures and the captions.

2. Adding cell padding as needed in Table Properties (much more trouble than
defining a style correctly).
