Default File Size Increases with Linked Graphics

In a Word2002 document I have about 2000 words, and links to 15 photo
files. I am careful to use "Link to File," and careful to not "include"
the photo files.

The file is about 17 MEGS!

It seems like Word2002 does not understand what "link" means, and must
be including the photo file anyway.

How can I link to photos and keep the doc file size down?

I've seen someone else complain about this happening as soon as the
graphics are formatted with text wrapping. Have you done this?

If that's the case, try formatting the graphics to be "inline with text".
Save, close and check the file size. Is it back down to a reasonable
level?

If yes, then use the Insert Frame command on the Forms toolbar to insert
"boxes" that will allow the text to wrap. Move the graphics into those.

Default File Size Increases with Linked Graphics

Hi Cindy,

I am having a similar problem with increased file size. I have a Word 2002
SP3 doc which I am trying to create an automatic updating letterhead so that
when our company letterhead changes, I can simply save over the linked file
and all my docs will automatically update.

I have successfully created this document by inserting an object into the
header and footer. This object is linked to a source file. When using 24
bit bmp source files, the document ends up over 3MB. I have since saved
source files as 256 colour (8 bit) bmp and this has reduced file to around
900KB.

Is there any other way to reduce file more than this?

Default File Size Increases with Linked Graphics

Hi Matt,

If you're using Insert=Object rather than Insert=Picture=From File (and choosing link only) you're adding overhead (size) to your
Word document.

If you're choosing to include the graphic (not just the link) in the Word document then a 24 bit graphic of the same dimensions is
going to be large. In that scenario Word may be able to maintain the disk based file size of the graphic in the file, if it's a lot
of a solid color then perhaps smaller, but generally it will grow a bit.

Default File Size Increases with Linked Graphics

Hi Bob,

Brilliant. I've been wasting my time investigating all of the various data
source file types (eg bmp, jpg etc) whereas it was the procedure within Word
that was the problem. I didn't realise that when you inserted an object and
then checked the link to file box that the object actually embeds into the
document AND links to it.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
