Default Mail Merge drops leading zeros from Access text field zips?

Access 2003 is my data source. Postal codes are set up as text fields.
Postal codes include U.S. and Canadian codes. Mail Merge in Word 2003 drops
leading zeros. What can I do to fix this without editing individual
addresses every mailing?
