Standard set of styles in Normal.dot
Is there a set-in-stone, standard set of styles included in Normal.dot?
That's all for now...any follow-up questions depend on the answer to the above. Thanks for your help. -Chuck |

Standard set of styles in Normal.dot
I don't know about 'set in stone' as they can be deleted, added to &
modified, but there is a definite collection of Styles available in any new Word doc based on the Normal.dot template... In a new blank doc go to FormatStyles & Formatting to launch the Styles & Formatting Task Pane. At the bottom of the pane open the Show: list & select All Styles to display them in the Task Pane. Alternatively, choose Custom... from that same list for a more concise listing in a dialog box, then you can click the Styles... button within it for a somewhat different presentation of the list. -- HTH |:) Bob Jones [MVP] Office:Mac "ChuckNC" wrote in message ... Standard set of styles in Normal.dot
One clarification: the built-in styles can't actually be deleted. If you
display "Styles in use" in the Styles dialog, you will by default see Normal, Default Paragraph Font, and Headings 1-3. These can never be deleted even if the headings haven't been used. Any other heading styles that get added to the list by being used also can't be deleted. All the rest of the styles can be "deleted"--but only from the list of "Styles in use." They're still in the list of "All styles." When you "delete" them, all you do is reset them to their default Normal.dot formatting, removing any customization you may have applied. -- Suzanne S. Standard set of styles in Normal.dot
Thanks CyberTaz & Suzanne.
How do you suppose a style that cannot be modified in any way at all got in? The style is named 1./1.1/1.1.1, and it looks like someone tried to name an outline numbered style in a memorable way. However, when I attempt to look at its formatting in Word 2003, I see that the style type is "list" rather than "paragraph" or "character." Does that style type affect my ability to modify or delete it? Should it? I do know this: I saved a copy locally and made a couple of changes to it (i.e., turned off numbering) and nothing happened when I closed the Modify Style dialog. Yeah, I did check Add To Template. So, maybe I just have a beast to work with, eh? As alluded to above, Normal.dot is stored on a network drive, not locally, and it appears that all users in the company use this one template. I say that because when I discovered that it was in the same location as Word's workgroup templates pointer, and that I couldn't change that path, I got an idea about who has the keys to the handcuffs. And this being a bank, I don't see them coming off. Although, I guess I might be the only one in company who doesn't use a locally stored instance of Normal.dot. On another note, does anyone know if marketing a Power Users version of Word ever occurred to Microsoft? A version that doesn't use, and never even glances at, Normal.dot. I mean, if you've browsed around Shauna Kelly's site, surely you've noticed that half her site wouldn't exist if it weren't for template-based or -related issues. Oh well, I'm a bit frustrated, but that seems a normal condition for Word users. If I'm really on the wrong track with this thing, please say so. I'd like nothing better than to learn from my mistake. Thanks for your help. "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote: One clarification: the built-in styles can't actually be deleted. Standard set of styles in Normal.dot
I think you will find there are very few users who understand how list
styles work. The numbering experts among us who have tried them have concluded that they don't, actually (any more than table styles), or at least that they are not robust enough for serious work. I have three list styles at the top of my styles list; one is the one you mention; another is 1 /a / i, and the third is Article / Section. These correspond to the three choices (in addition to No List) on the List Styles tab of Format | Bullets and Numbering. I *think* what these styles are supposed to do is apply an outline list to a single style, so that you can have all these different kinds of numbering applied to, say, Normal style, which serious users regard as a risky idea. -- Suzanne S. Thanks for the clarification Suzanne - sometimes I just get a little too
exuberant, & in this case, somewhat misleading. -- Regards |:) Bob J "Suzanne S. Barnhill" wrote in message ... One clarification: the built-in styles can't actually be deleted.
