Default Problems with Word 2003 after intalling Win XP

I had been using Word 2003 with Win 2K and upgraded the system to Win
XP/SP 2. Although the Windows installation said that my settings would
be preserved, some obviously were changed or deleted completely. One of
these was the settings for Word.

I have the Regional Settings and Language set to use Japanese for
non-Unicode fonts. With this, Word had everthing set to Japanese
settings. I changed the units of measurement to inches but the rulers
still display in milimeters (I tried going into print setup and
changing the paper size to Letter from A4 but it did not help). Also,
when I open a new document, it defaults to a Japanese font and shows
the language as Japanese. I can change the font to Times New Roman
(which is set as the default for Latin text) but then the language is
shown as Arabic. I changed the language (using the Language tab in
Tools) to English but when I open a new document or make any formatting
changes, it shifts back to the Japanese fornt and then, when I change
the font to TNR, it shows Arabic again.

How can I get Word to work right again?

Thank you. That took care of the ruler.

WRT the language. Although it shows Arabic when I shift to TNR
from the Japanese font, I discovered that it switches to English as
soon as I start to type so it is does not appear to be a problem.
However, it is strange behavior.

It's probably because when you switch, the Language AutoDetection won't work
out the language until it has seen sufficient input to determine this. A
guess is that Arabic is first in the list so it defaults to it until it
knows.

That may be it but as I said, since it does switch, it is not a major
problem.
It just seemed to be strange behavior.

I have discovered another problem with Japanese. When I try to print a
Japanese document with Word 2003, the texts prints as almost microprint
in
a small box in the center of the top of the page. If I print the same
document
using Wordpad, it prints normally and also prints normally with
WordPerfect
12. English prints fine.

I'd say that was a printer driver issue.

If it were a printer driver issue, I should have the same problem
when I print from other programs. However, it only happens
with Word. Also, in one document that was doing this, I found
an embedded "HTML Preformatted" style. When I deleted this,
it printed normally. However, I checked two other documents
that exhibited this behavior but did not find that style.

Not necessarily. Word and Publisher both have strong ties to printer
drivers. The "wrong" one could work in everything else but end up screwing
something up in either of those programs.
