Default how do i select excel rows to be merged with word documents?

without using name or address field.In the past office 2003,i was able to
select mailings numerically by the first colmn number

I think what you must be referring to is Edit Recipient List (on the
mailings tab) which is similar to the dialog in Word 2003 - see
