Default Automatic outlining

My computer has turned off the automatic outlining. I cannot get the word
document to tab over to the next section of the outline. I need this feature.
How to I get it back?

What version of Word?

If Word 2000 or earlier, check the box for "Tabs and backspace set left
indent" on the Edit tab of Tools | Options.

If Word 2002 or 2003, check the box for "Set left- and first-indent with
tabs and backspaces" on the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools |
AutoCorrect Options.
