Default Beta - Word

Having problems printing. I can open word 2003 documents and print them fine
(Baseline).

I open a new document to do a research paper. I choose double line and
check the remove the extra space put it in revision mode and begin. New Times
Roman 12 pitch

I try and print and the printer prints using large type right off the page.

Go in and set to final turn off revision mode - no go

Check margins - check fit to page - no go

Save in txt - lose formatting but print works

Go back reformat - have trouble changing type to New Times Roman 12 seems to
want 11 and fights to keep it at 11.

Run diagonistics out of outlook - no problems

This is the third research paper I have had this problem.

Oh yes - I have 2000 Works installed on my computer to match one of the
organizations I support. I cannot open works after installing the Beta so my
cut and paste backup is lost.

Cutting and pasting into a new document and accepting the destination format
does not work either.

Any suggestions?

Hi DBnut,

The MS Works folks included some new DLLs in Office 2007 that overwrite ones from older versions. The current workaround is to set
a restore poin and back up, then uninstall Works and delete or rename the Program Files\ folder for MS Works, restart the PC and
install Works again.

For printing, what is the printer model and driver version you are using?

Do you get the same result in Word 2007 using
Office Button[file]=Save As=PDF and
also if you switch printers in Office Button[file]=Print
then switch back?

Thanks for the fast response -

Issue 1.

I am a little confused to what you mean by restore point - directory backup ?
Uninstall from add/remove programs or program disk?
And when I reinstall the old file will not overwrite the new beta files so
life will be good again?

Issue 2.

Dell 962 driver 1.0.0.0

Q. Do you get the same result in Word 2007 using Office Button[file]=Save
As=PDF

A. Yes - only saving in text works.

Q Also, if you switch printers in Office Button[file]=Print then switch
back?

A. I only have one printer

I did manage to fool it once by opening a word 2003 document - printed it
(while my research paper was minimized.) Closed it and printed the research
paper worked fine that time.

Paul

PS - thanks for the tip on MS Works

Hi Paul,
A 'restore point' is a Windows feature, a sort of system bookmark, that can let you undo some changes you make intentionally or
accidentally later on when installing software.
Start=Programs=Accessories=System Tools

On backing up, how much and how often you create a backup is basically a personal choice on how much work you could afford to not
have the ability to copy back onto your PC in case of a catastrophic computer failure, or unexpected event. I've seen, for example,
a power brownout during a computer restart cause very unusual and unexpected results. While setup is not supposed to delete data
files, it may if they're stored within the Program files folders instead of in document folders.

Beta software is 'test drive' level, rather than 'daily use' level. While MS does have a goal of being able to restore your prior
version, there are no guarantees it can do so (too many outside factors, combination of software and devices and 3rd party "helpful"
utilities for housecleaning.

The Dell All-in-One (AIO) 962 Photo printer is made by LexMark and the Lexmark/Dell drivers have been a bit problematic with Word
2007, but you may want to check the Dell website for updated drivers and for a firmware update. The firmware is listed as
v.163_115.02.A04 (25Apr2005) and the driver as v.G15AWP.A01 (same date) to see if that helps. If I recall correctly it can also use
the Lexmark P6250 driver, but try the Dell one first.

However, if you're getting the same result when saving to PDF file that could be a problem with the upgrade of the file from Word
2003. Make a safety copy of your original Word 2003 .doc file, then in Word 2007 open it and use Office Button=Convert, then save,
close and reopen it. Does it print or save as PDF better than previously?

If you don't have an additional driver in Office Button=Print you can install the MS Office Document Image Writer and Document
Imaging features from the Microsoft Office 2007 choice in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel. That one will print to
file and then open it for viewing in the MS Office Document Imaging app.

Bob

Ok it is a system restore - just wanted to make sure. It could have been
some new beta feature for all I know.

Thanks for the backup advice - it sounds like the one I give my employees :-

It has to be the driver - I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver and it
worked. That is until this morning when I began writing another research
paper. I can grab an old 2003 word document and it works great. It only
happens when I open a new document. So hi ho hi ho its off to the Dell web
site I go. Thanks

I cannot tell you how happy I am that your advice to uninstall and install
Works 2000 - solved the problem. Now I can cut and paste the work I do out
of Word 7 into works and print - it saved my bacon this morning.

I will also install the image writer - maybe it will work

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Interesting that after reinstalling the driver you had a short term fix.

Please post back after you update the drivers (if it is an update) to let us know if that made a difference.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions for the following problem:
I, too, am having a similar printing issue with the Word 2007 Beta. The
page and font sizes are increasing by about 250% when printing directly from
Word. However, print size is normal when I first save as a PDF or do a
virtual print to ScanSoft Paperport, then print to my hardware printer. I am
using an HP PSC1210xi inkjet and have not tried printing with any other
printer.

I followed the tech reps advise and uploaded a new driver for my printer and
it solved the problem. My printer is a Dell in name only - I found the OEM
and used that update.

I suggest looking for a newer driver. Do a web search using your model
number space driver.

Suzanne,

I see that you are a Microsoft MVP. While I'm surely appreciative of the
time you contributed and the space you took in this thread to correct DBNUT
by informing him that the correct terminology was "thread" rather than
"string", I noticed that you totally ignored the Word Beta printing
problm...which, not so coincidentally, was the thread topic. Since it is
obvious that you have some spare time available, I would be most grateful for
any help you could give me in solving my Word 2007 printing problem.

Thank you,
Ben

What you are using is beta software. The printing problems many users are
having with this software are well documented here and elsewhere and can be
located with Google. Many problems seem to result from changing resolution
(from "Draft output," for example) after starting Word; this can be resolved
by selecting the desired printer Properties before starting Word. For the
rest, printing to PDF seems to work. In some cases, updated printer drivers
help, but other printer manufacturers probably won't provide updated drivers
until Word 2007 is officially released.

My intent in my previous post was to disabuse you of the notion that anyone
from Microsoft would answer your question whether you started a new thread
or not. If you do not find help from the other users in this NG, then you
may have little recourse; even if you are willing to pay for technical
support, I doubt that MS is providing TS for Word 2007 at this point.
