Default Words aren't deleting when I type over them

Please help!
Normally, when editing text, I highlight a word/phrase and start typing the
new text. The highlighted text is replaced by the new. But now, suddenly,
it's not doing that. The new text is appearing next to the old and I have to
separately delete the old. This is doubling my edit time!
What happened? I didn't do anything to any settings, etc. It just started
happening out of nowhere.
