Default Double-clicking .doc file to launch Word

I'm using Word 2000 on a machine running XP SP2. When I'm in Windows
Explorer and double-click on a .doc file, Word opens, but it opens two
documents. One is the document I'm trying to load, which Word minimizes.
The other is a "new document." I have to click on the minimized document
twice to get it on screen. Is there a setting I can change to get Word to
display the document I want straightaway?
Thanks in advance.
