automatic dates in template
How do I stop the date inserted in a template from updating when the
document created from the template is stored and printed later? EG: I have created a template with my letter head etc. I also have included in the template [insert] date and time. Update automatically is not ticked. When I open a new document using this template the correct date is entered into the document. No problems. When I store it or send it to clients the date remains as the original date that I sent the letter. This is all good. When I or my clients open the document sometime later (weeks months years etc) the date remains as the original date that I sent the letter. This is what I want and is all good. My problem is when I (or my clients) open the document some time later and then print it the date is updated and the date that is printed is the date the letter was printed not created! This is not what I want. I print out a 6 month old letter and it show the current date not when I sent it. How do I stop the date from automatically updating. |

I am using student edition for mac. At [insert] there is no insert

Change the date field to a createdate field in the template and in each of
the documents you have already created from it. Update the fields and save the documents/template. The template will always show the date the template was created. Not that I am aware of: it should be the same as everyone else's Word. However, have you turned off those horrible 'adaptive menus'? This ridiculous 'feature' has finally had its day in Word 2007 - about 10 years too late! Right-click on any menu and select Customize. Check the box to Always Show Full Menus. It shouldn't be necessary to use the Insert | Field dialog, however, if the
template contains a DATE field (as it evidently does); it can be manually edited to CREATEDATE (Alt+F9 to view the field code). -- Suzanne S. Hi Adam,
Suzanne's or Graham's advice will let you fix your current date issues--alt-F9 is the same as option-F9 on the Mac, if necessary. There is only one version of Word for the Mac--the student one has exactly the same features. If you can't find Insert | Field, make sure you didn't accidentally turn on "Word 5.1 Menus". Look under View to see if there's a check next to that option, uncheck if so. (I don't think MacWord ever got the horrible adaptive menus that Terry mentions) If you still can't find it, post on the MacWord ng linked below. The current status of "update automatically" in the Insert | Date and Time dialog means nothing. That checkbox only applies when one is actually inserting a date that way. If you used the keyboard shortcut for InsertDate, it inserts an automatically updating {DATE} field. You can record a macro of yourself inserting a non-updating date, and then assign it a keyboard shortcut, for efficiency in future docs. Ask how on the MacWord group, if interested.
