Default how do i get word to open my files?

I cannot get word to open any files in my hard drive.In the OPEN dialogue
window I can scroll through all the folders in my drive but when it gets to
the last sub folder it shows empty, yet when I click on tools-properties a
properties windows pops up with all the contents of the folder. Anybody khow
what the problem is?

Default how do i get word to open my files?

In the Open dialog, what type of files is it set to open: it sounds as
though it is not set to Word .docs or to All Files.
