Is there a way to customized "ties" (the curly braces) above/below
characters in WORD?

Use the braces in the AutoShapes gallery (on the Drawing toolbar in
Word 2003, or on the Insert Shapes button in Word 2007). After
drawing a brace in a vertical orientation, drag the rotation handle to
make it horizontal, and resize/position it as needed.
