Default How do I save several word files into one?

I have a series of word documents- book chapters, all with their own endnotes
and I need to combine them in one file for a book. I want to retain the
content of each file, so that the endnotes appear at the end of each separate
chapter. When I have tried to do this, the files are either saved as endnotes
to the source document, or the endnotes renumber themselves.

You need to set the endnotes to restart each section. If you have chapters
that contain more than one section, the endnotes can be suppressed for every
section in the chapter but the last (there's a check box for this on the
Layout tab of Page Setup).

Nope doesn't work. Unless I misunderstand your solution. The thing is I have
all the files as separate word files with endnotes in them. each time I try
to save a second or third file ( chapter) by adding it to the end ot the
previous one, everything still goes in as a footnote, and the headers and
footers dont' remain as the original second file- they revert to the first
one.

Switch to Normal view before using Insert File, or place the insertion point
above the section break before the endnotes. Working in Normal view is
easier, though.
