Default Columns formatting in word

I'm trying to convert an existing document into columns, but when I follow
the instructions by selecting a part of the document the highlighted or
selected portion doesn't move to the second column. What am I doing wrong?

Don't just select the text you want shifted to the second column. You have
to select all text that needs to be in a double-column format. The first
half of the text selected will be in the first column and the second half
will be in the second column like two columns in a newspaper or a magazine.
If you want some text in the right column to be directly beside some material
in the right column, then make a Table two boxes wide and as many boxes tall
as needed, instead of two columns.
