Default doc management - tracking files, etc

A frequent problem for me is tracking graphics and other support files
for a publication.
Most of my docs have numerous graphics, often from different sources.
(Visio, screen captures, eps or bitmaps from PDFs, etc.)
Word doesn't seem to keep any info on the filename or graphic type
unless the graphic is linked?

What are some favorite tricks for tracking all this stuff?
Is there a reasonable way to keep the info inside the doc for future
reference?

You could put the information somewhere right next to an (inline), say,
picture, and format it as hidden. But generally I feel such stuff is too
risky if more than 1 person is working on a document (you might also
forget such stuff yourself sometimes :-)).

I keep every picture that goes into a large document as an external,
separate file anyway.

Getting cautious with age ...

There's no standard way. When a graphic is embedded in a Word document, no
source information is retained, not even the original format in the case of
graphics. You could create a style called something like Graphic Info, with
the font style set to hidden.

I agree with the other poster: even if you don't want to link the file,
always keep the original anyway. Documents full of graphics particularly
from multiple sources are more prone to corruption.

so- do you keep a seperate doc with tracking info, do you scribble on
paper and throw it in a file folder, or what?
(I've used variations of these, of course...)

For single documents, I use a dedicated folder for the document and its
supporting files(also containing the inevitable historic versions, client
comments, etc). But you seem to need to track more details about where the
files came from, which I'm not normally concerned about.

For larger projects I use a spreadsheet, with a set of macros to track the
set of documents as a whole.
