I need to convert multi-line tab-delineated example sentences into tables, so
that all equivalent items on each line are on top of each other. That I can
do. But each multi-line example already comes with an automatic number within
parentheses. I simply want that same *automatic* number to reside in the
top-leftmost cell of the table, with empty cells beneath it. How do I either
transfer or replace that automatic number in(to) my table?

If the numbers are created by automatic paragraph numbering, you will have
to convert the numbers to text before you can manipulate the lines into a
table. You'll need a macro for that

Sub NumbersToText()
ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText
End Sub

Then the process is essentially that at

illustrations match your text. If you make a mistake, backup with CTRL+Z or
close the document without saving it and start again.
