Default strange line breaks on 'return'

I often have a situation where hitting enter to start a new line will
actually place the cursor a line above where I should be, and then when I
start typing, the cursor/text I've typed will jump down to the correct line.

Any attempts to change the style to Normal or any other flush-left format
will not produce any results.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Sounds as if it could be an issue with the graphics card driver. See if
updating that helps at all.
