Default Microsoft Word: disconnected by "abnormal runtime error" popup

The pagination ran away with my original draft, flipping through additional
blank pages until I had to turn off the computer to shut it down. Now when I
try to use Word, I keep getting interrupted by a popup that flashes "abnormal
runtime error" before disconnecting me and erasing my text.
