Were rolling out Office 2003 / XPSP2, and would like to place a large amount
of templates in a location where all users of a PC will have access to them
through the normal New Document Templates path.

The path C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Templates doesnt seem to do
this, as you might have expected.

Neither does dropping them into C:\program files\Microsoft
Office\Templates\1033 where all the other standard ones are stored.

Previously, with Office XP / W2K we could only place them into each users
profile for them to become visible, after Word or another Office app had
already been opened once with the user logged on in their profile.

We just want to drop all our standard templates into a foldre so all users
of a PC see them with the rest of the template!!

Nothing you add to the 1033 folder will be seen by users (or Word).

You need to designate a Workgroup templates folder for each user. I believe
this can be set using policies.

Often it works best to actually have each user have their own set of
templates which is updated from your central repository upon login.

"Sharing a Global Template on a Network

If a global template is to be shared over a network, it should be placed in
a folder on the network server to which all users have file read access. Each
user's network login file should be set to copy the file to the user's
personal startup folder when the user logs onto the network if the network
version is newer than the user's version. That way you can update the
template without everyone having to be off from Word when you do it. (The
personal startup folder can be on a network drive or a local drive; my
preference is to use a local drive.)

If you can't work with the login scripts or aren't worried about updating
the template you will probably want to use shortcuts (Mac: aliases) to it in

The second is the Office Startup folder. Its location will vary depending on
both the Operating System and the version of Word (Office) being used. I
believe that the Word Startup folder can be different for each user in later
versions of Windows but that the Office startup folder will always be in the
Programs folder rather than in the user profile.

Examples of global templates can be found in the Legal Toolbars, the
Letterhead System and the Gender Toolbars. Information on moving / copying
customizations to a global template can be found in Moving (Sharing)
Customizations in Microsoft Word."


seems to cover of most of what we need i think - one problem is we've lots
of remote users who won't be using GPO or even so muhc as VPN in to the
network.

plus due to network consrtaints (we are currently a subnet on a ridiculously
constrained University network), logoon scripts and GPO aren't even an option
until the move to our own network is complete.

you've given me enought to look at for the final soluiton for now, so I will
just continue with placing in c:\docs & settings\userprofile\Application
data\Microsoft\templates for the individual until we can decide course of
action

You don't want to be using the Word Startup folder. Global templates are not
used to create documents based on them, they are used to change the
interface, menus, AutoText, keyboard shortcuts.

The Workgroup Templates folder can be a shared network folder or can be
local. It is the holder for document templates. It is a separate folder from
the User Templates folder, although you don't need to use two folders. The
idea is that the Workgroup templates folder holds only your standard
templates. It does not hold normal.dot
