Default Cleartype font in MS Word only

I swear that my last laptop displayed all MS Word documents with
cleartype style "font smoothing" when in Print Layout view, but NOTHING
ELSE on my computer EVER used any font smoothing. My old laptop was
completely up to date with all MS software. XP SP2, and MS Office
2003, both with all the latest updates.

I got a new laptop recently, and I cannot find a way to get this
behavior back. Enabling cleartype from Windows XP's display properties
(I am again running SP2 with all current updates) distorts the fonts
throughout all applications, and gives me a headache. I have used the
Cleartype Powertoy to tweak every aspect, but none comes close to what
I had before. I know without a single doubt that I did NOT use
cleartype on my old laptop (except possible somehow in Print Layout
view in Word...?). I also know without a single doubt that I was NOT
using the Reading Layout view...

Does anyone know how I can get this font smoothing in Print Layout view
back without changing the fonts in any other applications?

Thanks,
David

Hi David:

ClearType is on or off for the entire Operating System.

The display in Print Layout view is generated from the printer driver.

I suggest your answer is perhaps to disable ClearType and ensure you have
the correct driver for your printer, not the Windows default.

Sorry: I could have sworn you were correct that previous versions of Word
offered the ability to turn Font Smoothing on or off for Word alone, but I
can't find it now. Macintosh Word definitely had it, but I can't find it in
Win Word.

Sorry...
