Default I can no longer paste over selected text. Why?

Previously I have been able to highlight text, and then paste other text over
the highlighted text. All of a sudden, when I paste other text it inserts the
new text but does not "delete" the selected text. What can I do to change it
back again?

Tools Options Edit check "Typing replaces selection".
