Default Autotext in footer

Word 2000 on XP home. I have used autotext in footers for
a long time - but now it is greyed out so I cannot select
my usual 'autonumber'. I can get round it in the footer
toolbar but it is better to have the complete phrase by
auto; '1 of 5'. Plus of course needing some of the
other options at times.
Please advise how I can re-open Autotext.
