I'm using Office 2003. I have an Excel file with spreadsheets that I am
copying and pasting into a WORD document. I am using the Paste SpecialPaste
Link command to do this.

Once the spreadsheet appears, I then use the "Format Object" command to
resize the object to fit on the page.

I then add a border to the object.

I have found the following problems:

1. After I do about a dozen spreadsheets, the pasting of additional sheets
is no longer possible. I get an error message stating, "Error, not a valid
link." This is ridiculous of course and I am very frustrated with it.

2. After I have pasted in whatever spreadsheets I want and close the file.
When I reopen the file and allow it to update the spreadsheet, it blows out
the formatting and I end up with the original size spreadsheet being left.
This extends well past the borders of the page in the WORD document because
for some STUPID reason the object resizes itself to some size greater than
100% (much less the size I wanted it to be) and the aspect ratio changes -
width percentile is larger than the height percentile.

3. After I paste a few spreadsheets, the program will choke on the links and
then I get a constant stream of STUPID error messages saying "Insufficient
Memory for Windows to Continue the Operation. Do you want to continue
anyway?"

4. If it does update the spreadsheet when I hit "Update Links" it will chop
off a portion of the spreadsheet when I resize the spreadsheet.

What gives?

I'm using a toshiba tablet pc (R15-S829) that has a 1.7 Ghz processor, 512
Megs of Ram, and ample hard drive room to run the program. I just updated
Office 2003, so I am wondering what the problem is with this program?

Hi Clint,

1. There are many reasons why the links might stop pasting, including a
corrupted Word document (it does happen from time to time) or interference
by anti-virus programs, etc. Microsoft has various Knowledge Base articles
on
such issues. The problem might also be caused by bugs that MS has
released patches for, so you should ensure your Word installation is up to
date. Sometimes the workaround is as simple as saving, closing, and
re-opening the document.

2. The whole idea of linking is to allow your linked object to update and
reflect the current state of the object it's linked to. That includes
formatting, which is why Word reformats the object to match the source. If
you want the table in Word to have a particular format, you'll have to
format it that way at the source. The re-sizing issue might be caused by the
choice of paste format. When you paste links, you have a variety to use. I
don't have this problem if the object is pasted in Excel Worksheet format.

3. This may mean nothing more than that the undo buffer is full. Also see 1.

4. There are various reasons for this, either of which might apply to your
situation. The most likely one is that there is a limit to how much of a
worksheet Word can display on a page. Some of that is based on the number of
Excel columns, and their width, the other is based on the number of rows.
Anything outside that is liable to be cut off.

I just resolved this issue a couple weeks ago: Here is the solution
that worked for me:
"C:\WINNT\TemporaryInternetFiles" directory must be set to "EVERYONE
ALLOW".
