Default replacing with highlighting

it seems like this function is there, but I don't know how to configure the
dialogue box in '07 to allow me to find a character ("(" in this case), and
have it replaced with a highlighted version of itself. In other words,
there's a paragraph with a bunch of enumeration listed (i.e., "(i)", "(vii)",
etc.). I want each of these starting points to be highlighted to make
reading easier of the main points. I try to do replace, "(", with "(", and
under options, replace formatting, highlight. But this doesn't seem to get
me where I want to be. Any suggestions of how to do this?

the flip side, for future use, is how to find formatted areas for review.

Thx.

Default replacing with highlighting

Two possible explanations occur to me:

1. The (i) was inserted using a Word numbering feature, and therefore the
( doesn't really exist as normal text. Hence, Word cannot find the (
characters you see, since they aren't really there as characters.

2. Your current highlight setting is No Color. When applying highlighting as
formatting in a Find/Replace, Word applies the current setting displayed in
the highlighting tool. If it's set to No Color (rather than yellow or
something else), you will not see an effect.

My guess is that it's problem #1.

To find formatted areas for review, click in the Find what: box, then click
More , then Format - and choose the formatting you're searching for. It
will show up under the Find what: field (which can be left blank to search
for anything with the chosen formatting).

Herb, thanks. Actually I'm pretty sure it's number 2, given the numbering is
in a paragraph, not in listed order. How do I check/change my highlighting
tool setting?

Click the dropdown arrow contained in the highlighting tool and click one of
the colors. The bar at the bottom of the highlighting tool will now display
that color, and that's the color that Replace with: will use.
