I used to be able to edit buttons in word and excel for custom macros.
where do i go to do this?

I can get the macro recorded and on the ribbon, but i don't like the default
button symbols.

Basically, you complain to Microsoft, loudly and often, about their failure to
provide any way to customize buttons beyond the inadequate selection in the
Customize Modify dialog, and you hope they fix that failure in the next
version of Office because it isn't going to happen in Office 2007.

I assume you are trying to get this button on your QAT. You could
assign the macro to the onAction callback of a custom ribbon button
control and then stick that control on the ribbon.
