Default Remove split for default document

Word always opens a new document with the split view (left frame is a
thumbnail view, right frame is the document) and I can turn it off by
clicking WindowRemove Split, but it always defaults back to a new document
with the split. How do I change this on the master document or template? I
don't remember this behavior before Office 2003. Thanks for any help you can
provide.

Default

The control is View | Thumbnails. You may need to do this in Normal.dot; see
