hyperlinks in a doc
Word 2002, 10.6612 under Win 2000. I have a lengthy manual with some
hyperlinks inside that link to other places inside the same doc. There are links from the TOC, internal links to specific sections from within other sections, and "return to the TOC" links that just go back to the top. My problem is with the specific section type links. In all cases but one, the hyperlinks go to the first page of a section. The last page of each section has as its last line one of the 'RETURN TO THE TABLE OF CONTENTS" links. The first page of each section has a Header 1 style that the TOC uses to link to the sections. Now, say you're in section 2 and you come upon a link to section 4. Instead of taking you to the first page of section 4, the link takes you to the last page of section 3! When I put my cursor on the last page of section 3, I can see in the STYLE box that there is a HEADER 1 definition lurking there, invisibly. So I know that the hyperlink is thinking that this is indeed the right place to go. But I didn't put that HEADER1 style there -- and if I left-click and try to highlight the blank space under the RETURN TOT HE TABLE OF CONTENTS |

Sorry -- I accidentally posted this before I was done. Let me continue from
where I left off. But I didn't put that HEADER1 style there -- and if I left-click and try to highlight the blank space under the RETURN TO THE TABLE OF CONTENTS link, I can see that there is a HEADER1 field there -- sometimes. If I try to delete this, I lose my page break, the real HEADER1 goes to normal text, and I am sitting here fuming. I've done everything I can think of in terms of page breaks and what-not, but I'm stumped. I can't see any weird code when I Alt-F9. But remember the hyperlink that DOES work, the one I mentioned earlier? That one does not ocur at the top of a section, but in the middle of one. Woerd handles this one perfectly. And all the TOC links work just as they should. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm really stumped. |

Well, I have contrived a work-around -- I am linking to the Header2 style
subhead that sits BELOW the Header1 style. This works, but still leaves me with the question of how and why Word is anticipating the placement of the Header1 style on the preceding page. |

I suspect that you are using a manual page break before your section break
rather than formatting your heading style for page break before or inserting a section break that starts a new page. Counter-intuitive as it seems, a manual page break will be _inside_ the paragraph that follows the page break; it does not substitute for a paragraph break. Therefore, a style applied to a paragraph that follows a manual page break will include anything between the page break and the preceding paragraph mark. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://www.mvps.org/word which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup. You're right, Charles, I *am*using manual page breaks. That must be it...
I'll have a go at reformatting the header style and see what happens.
