Default Text Box Disappears!

When I insert a text box and then try to click in it to type or paste text,
it either disappears or another box appears. I can type or paste my text into
this "box within a box" but I don't need a box within a box! How do I just
type or paste text into the text box that is first created? (I'm embarrased
to say that I've worked on this for 5 hours and have searched everywhere I
know to search to find out how to do this, I'm sure, simple task! PLEASE
HELP!!!
