Hi Terry,
For powers, you typically hold down the shift key and press the 6 at the top of the keyboard to get the caret symbol (^). Then enter the power number, which you may want to superscript. For roots, it's probably easiest to express them as reciprocal or decimal powers. Alternatively, you can use the Equation Editor or an Equation field (the latter via Insert|Field). If the exponents are 2 and 3, you're better off to use the dedicated characters. Press and hold Alt, then type the numbers 0178 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt.
