Default Cross referencing without autonumbering

I can use cross referencing where I've got autonumbering switched on for
paragraphs in my Word 2003 documents. However, a colleague prefers not to use
autonumbering, but would still like to cross-reference paragraph numbers, and
have them update. I can't think of a way to do this, has anyone else managed
it?

Many thanks

If you apply a bookmark to any text you can insert a cross-reference to the
content of that bookmark.

Suzanne

Thanks for your response. I have tried this, but I then the reference keeps
stating the bookmarked text rather than the paragraph number. And would this
automatically rename the reference if I inserted a new paragraph above the
bookmarked one?

Regards

Phil

You stated: "a colleague prefers not to use autonumbering, but would still

If numbering is being applied manually, then the number can be included in
the bookmark (and no, neither the numbered item nor the cross-reference will
update automatically). If numbering is not being applied manually, then it
is autonumbering. The numbering will be updated with insertions and
deletions in the numbered list, and you can use Insert | Reference |
Cross-reference to "Numbered item." Such cross-references do update, but not
automatically; you have to use F9 (or Print/Print Preview) to update them
manually.

There is no way to combine manual numbering and automatic updating.

Thanks again Suzanne.

It was my bad choice of terminology. By "automatic" I mean "non-manual",
i.e. the user doesn't have to maintain the references herself. I appreciate
that the user would need to use F9.
