Default How do I compare dates in a Word IF field?

I need to compare a static date with a date coming in via a MERGEFIELD. In my
test, static date is 12/12/2005 and the MERGEFIELD date is 12/12/2004. My
field is {IF "12/12/2005" {MERGEFIELD DATE} "Static date is later" "Static
date is earlier"}.

Using the figures above, the field results show "Static date is earlier". If
I change my static date to 12/12/2003, fields results show "Static date is
later".

Can someone please help? Is there some way I have to set out my dates within
the IF field to convince Word that they are dates?
