Default Adding more vertical space between bullet items

Using Word 2003 at work, Word 2007 at home. I am writing this from work.

I want to make another bullet style that has a bit more vertical space
between bullet items. The default bullet spacing appears to be single
spaced.

Original:

* ;lkj;lkj;lkj;lk
lkjk;lkljl
* j;lkjlkl
kljkj
* lkjlkjlkj

I want this:

* lkjhlkjhljhlkjh
kjlkjhlkjhlkjhlkjh
kjlhlkjhjk

* ;lkj;lkj;lkj;lkj
;lkj;lk;ljk

* ;lkj;lkj;lk;lkj;kj

I want to adjust the vertical space between the items.

When I pick Modify Style on the original I see :
No List + Font:Symbol, 12 pt, Indent: Left: 0.25", hanging: 0.25", Outline
numbered + Level : 1 + Numbering Style: Bullet + Aligned at: 0.25" + Tab
after: 0.5" + Indent at: 0.5"

I don't see how to change the vertical spacing between bullet items.

I also want to make sure that this new spacing is the default because I
rarely use single spaced bullets.

Look at the Paragraph style and first make sure that the option 'Don't add
space between paragraphs of the same style' is unchecked. Then make sure
that the Space After is set to 6 or 12 pts (or whatever you want). Make sure
to check the Save to Template option.

When I select a bullet style and go to the Modify Style window and select
the Format button I see the "Paragraph..." choice as grey'd out. I can't
change the Paragraph settings.

You don't modify the bullet style -- you just modify the "text" -- by going
to the Format Menu -- choosing Paragraph... and selecting either 1 1/2 line
spacing... or put in 6, 9, or 12 (or whatever) in the Spacing "after"
option.

Thanks. That makes an entry in the Styles list called "After: 12pt".

I would like to keep that style for reuse on other documents.

When I select the "After: 12 pt" entry in the list of styles and go to the
Modify Style window and check the box "Add to template" it gets rid of the
bullet at the beginning of each line. Why does it do that?

With the cursor in the paragraph, right-click on the original style (the one
that after: 12pt) is based on and choose Update style to match selection.
The After: 12pt style should disappear and the bullets will now work as
required.
