Default USB memory save corrupts

Word 2000 has started corrupting files when saving to usb memory stick.
It still reads from usb memory. No problem with Excel. No problem with hard
disc.
It is not a space problem on the usb.
It gives "cannot save due to a file permission error" message.
I have rebooted pc and reinstalled word 2000 - no better.

it is generally discouraged to open and save Word files directly from/to
USB memory drives: Word creates a temporary file in the same folder and
the size of these files at run-time is very hard to predict. In essence,
that means that your drive _could_ in theory overflow, and that's not
something you want to risk with/to your data.
