Default IF Statements and REF Fields

Help! I am building a Word Template and need to do arithmetic with a REF
field. I have tried {={REF X}-1} and {={{REF X}-1}} to no avail. I also
tried {IF {REF X} = "Y" "W" "Z"} but that didn't work either. Any
ideas?
