I would like to maintain information in the file property custom area.
This data I would like to display in the word document. It doens't
look like these custom information can be inserted as a field like the
general information. Is there any solution for this or any alternative
how data can be maintained centrally for a whole document and reused
in the document?

Yes, you can insert a DocProperty field, naming the custom property the
field should display.

Just in case you weren't aware of it, you can also Print the doc properties
independently if you choose to... in the Print Dialog box select it in the
Print What: list.
