Default autoformat and vertical lines in the left margin

Sometimes when I copy and paste a document, then use autoformat, I get
vertical lines in the left margin. It doesn't happen all the time, but when
it does I can't get rid of them and they show up when printing. I'm using
Word 2003.

Thanks!!

Is track changes turned on in these documents? The vertical line sounds like
a markup indicator to me.
