Default Open Excel 97 files in Word 97

When I open an Excel 97 file in Word 97 I am presented with what looks like
garbled code. When one of my colleagues opens an Excel 97 file in Word 97
they can view the data with no problem. What do I need to do to stop this
from happening?

Personally I wouldn't recommend you open an Excel file in Word.
Instead you should open it in Excel and copy/paste the relevant data
to Word. If you save the Excel workbook in Word then you end up with a
Word document with an Excel file extension and it can no longer be
opened in Excel.

If you still to open and convert an Excel workbook in Word then do you
have all of your converters installed for the Office installation?
