How does one open .odt files in MS Word?

*.odt or *.dot?
A Word file that ends with *.dot is a template. The way templates are _supposed_ to work is that you put them in your templates directory (See Tools - Options - File Locations) and then you use File - New to open a new document based on that template. You don't. You will have to save from Open Office in Word format.
