*.odt or *.dot?

A Word file that ends with *.dot is a template. The way templates are
_supposed_ to work is that you put them in your templates directory (See
Tools - Options - File Locations) and then you use File - New to open a new
document based on that template.

But you ought to be able to just click on the file and have it open anyway.

You don't. You will have to save from Open Office in Word format.
