Word 2003 had a "reveal format" feature which permitted changing the format
of downloaded news articles, academic papers, etc. Word 2007 doesn't seem to
have a comparable feature. Anybody got an idea?

In fact, the old Reveal Formatting task pane is still available.
Right-click the Quick Access Toolbar and select the Customize item. In
the dialog, set the category to Commands Not in the Ribbon, select the
Reveal Formatting item, and click the Add button.

However, there's another tool you should look at first, called the
Style Inspector. Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S to open the main Styles pane
(or click the little launcher button at the bottom right corner of the
Styles group on the Home ribbon), and then click the second button at
the bottom of that pane to open the Style Inspector. That not only
lets you see the sources of formatting in the current selection, it
also lets you selectively remove them. As a bonus, it takes up less
room than the Reveal Formatting pane.

As a last comment, you can put a button for the Style Inspector on the
QAT -- use the same Customize dialog.

Excellent information in this reply. I've always wondered, though, why MS
Word has never incorporated a "reveal code" feature similar to Word
Perfect's. The Word Perfect reveal code feature opens a separate window that
allows you to see the formatting for text above and below the insertion
point. Really helpful in many cases.

Just to mention that Bibico and I are kindred spirits: I loved that Word
Perfect "Reveal Codes" feature and Word has never come close to providing
anything as useful.
