Default Cannot change Read-Only status on 2003 template in 2007

I have a Word 2003 template that I need to update in Word 2007 but I
am getting a Read Only dialog box when I attempt to save the changes.

--In Word 2007, the template is listed as being open in Compatibility
Mode at the top of the screen, but does NOT also say Read Only.

--When I access the doc's properties via Windows Explorer, the Read
Only option is NOT checked.

--When I access the Protect Document status via the template, it is
listed as Unrestricted Access.

--When I attempt to alter the template via a document that uses that
template, again, I get a Read Only dialog box when I try to save
template changes.

Any suggestions -- other than saving as a 2007 template (not an
option) -- are greatly appreciated...

why isn't this an option? You could save it back to DOT later again (if
need be -- though with Word 2010 out, users need a pretty good
explanation why they're still working on an Office version which cannot
open DOCX/DOTX).

Default Cannot change Read-Only status on 2003 template in 2007

I am the only one in my office with 2007; all others are still on 2003
until we migrate to 2010 in a few months. Meanwhile, others use the
template. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that a dotx template won't
play with 2003.

Thank you for your reply,

-Hans

users of versions older than 2007 need to install the compatibility
pack; with that, they can open and save to the new file formats:

Default Cannot change Read-Only status on 2003 template in 2007

Re-visiting to my own question...

I now have Word 2010 and am experiencing the same trouble as noted
below: Word will not let me update a template via a document, saying
that the template is Read-Only when no such restriction has been
applied. I tried saving both the document and the template
to .docx/.dotm formats, to no avail. (They still open in Compatibility
Mode.)

I've got about 15 templates that I use regularly; they all
periodically evolve, usually via a document attached to it. Any help
is appreciated, as rebuilding them all as .dotm templates from scratch
would be a major undertaking.

Thanks...
