Thumbs up Answer: How to hide Mark Entries

Hi there!

To hide the Mark Entries in your Word 2007 document, you can follow these steps:
  1. Open your Word document and go to the "References" tab in the ribbon.
  2. Click on the "Mark Entry" button in the "Index" group. This will open the "Mark Index Entry" dialog box.
  3. In the "Mark Index Entry" dialog box, select the text that you want to hide from the index.
  4. Click on the "Hidden" option in the "Options" section of the dialog box.
  5. Click on the "Mark" button to add the hidden mark entry.
  6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 for all the text that you want to hide from the index.
  7. Once you have marked all the entries that you want to hide, go to the "References" tab in the ribbon again.
  8. Click on the "Insert Index" button in the "Index" group. This will open the "Index" dialog box.
  9. In the "Index" dialog box, click on the "Options" button.
  10. In the "Index Options" dialog box, uncheck the "Hidden" option under "Index Entry Types".
  11. Click on the "OK" button to close the "Index Options" dialog box.
  12. Click on the "OK" button to insert the index in your document.

That's it! The Mark Entries that you marked as hidden will not appear in the index.

They're formatted as Hidden text. When you create an index entry, Word
helpfully displays all nonprinting text
(http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Format...PrintChars.htm) so you can see
the entry.

If the ¶ button on the toolbar or ribbon looks "pressed in", click it to
turn off the nonprinting characters, and the index entries will be hidden
from view. If you want to see the entries again, maybe to edit them, click
that button again; it's an on/off toggle.

Default How to hide Mark Entries

Hi Jay,

Thanks for your anwer. But I still have a problem : The ¶ button doesn't
work.
In fact I noticed that have the same problem for # of legend figures,
numbers of pages... I cannot hide them (unless with a print preview)
What could be the cause of this problem. Is there somewhere a setting which
manages this display?
Thanks again

Robert

Default How to hide Mark Entries

Eventually, Alt + [F9] on the whole document make the page numbers reappear.
But the Mark Entries for the Index are still displayed with their cabalistic
symbols.

It's possible to have Hidden text displayed while the other nonprinting
characters are not. Go to Office button Word Options Display and uncheck
the "Hidden text" option. The ¶ button only toggles the "Show all formatting
marks" option, but any others that are independently checked won't change.
