Default Did Word 2007 fix the buggy "features" of table styles?

Hi,

I am creating templates that will be used by a number of people in my
office. Rather than using macros (which require knowledge and conscious
effort on the part of every user who works in the documents), I'd like to use
table styles so everyone's documents will automatically have the same
appearance.

We don't have Office 2007 yet, but it is being rolled out in the next
quarter. (YES! I work at a federal government facility. In 2010, we will
get 2007 just as the rest of the world starts using Office 2010...) I'm
wondering if some of the weird things were fixed in 2010 ... Like:

- The inability to assign a 10 point font to a table style

- The inability to have the table actually USE the paragraph formatting that
you think you are setting in the dialog boxes

- Having the table default to whatever style the paragraph is when you do
the insert table function

I've poked around the internet a bit but I'm not seeing this question
answered. I'd appreciate any input from you folks who have already
implemented Office 2007. Thanks a lot!

The more things change ... I remember putting up with that nonsense at the
federal agency where I worked--years ago.

The short answer is "yes". The longer one starts with "But..." ....you
must understand a bit about defaults, the normal style , and table normal
style.
The defaults (font, font size, etc.) used to be hard coded in Word (TNR 12,
single spaced, no space after, etc.). In W2007 you can set them for any
document or template.
As far as font settings are concerned, normal and table normal are the same
within Word. And when Word "notices" that one is different, the settings in
normal will override the settings in table normal.
So if you want to be able to set font characteristics in table styles in
W2007, set your template's defaults and then do not change the normal style
itself. Then you can make font setting in table styles that will stick.

Save this post and read it later after you have become at lest a little
familiar with W2007.
Along with these Word team blogs:
http://blogs.msdn.com/microsoft_offi...perations.aspx

and
http://blogs.msdn.com/microsoft_offi...nd-themes.aspx

Table styles work effectively in W2003 too. The way to avoid the
normal€“table normal conflict in W2003 is to avoid setting font
characteristics in table styles. Use paragraph styles to format table
text instead.

I apply paragraph styles even in W2007 (though I still keep normal
unmodified) because most of the tables I must format are text tables (mainly
words) instead of data tables (mainly numbers). I usually need at least four
paragraph styles for tables (table headings, table text, table bullet1, and
table bullet2).

- The inability to assign a 10 point font to a table style

I have no problems with this in W2007 and W2003 when I use the methods I
describe here.
- The inability to have the table actually USE the paragraph formatting that
you think you are setting in the dialog boxes

Same answer.
- Having the table default to whatever style the paragraph is when you do
the insert table function

If that is what you want, do not set font characteristics in the table
style.

I've poked around the internet a bit but I'm not seeing this question
answered. I'd appreciate any input from you folks who have already
implemented Office 2007. Thanks a lot!

HTH,
Pam
